People tend to be super ageist in general, and its far worse with women... and its very curious that it is people in his twenties (20-29) the most ageist.

AS a teacher i am exposed to teen culture and thinking ways, and i can tell you that Teens are fine with it… They consider everyone over 20 old! But they actually distinguish between "Holt old" and "Not hot old" XD.

I have like 6 "rabid" Sam fans in my class (5 girls & one boy) , and thanks to The Hunger Games, Djats and Peaky Blinders basically...they dont know Me before you, (thank God).

Those students call him Dilf, Daddy, Snack, and Hot, they consider him "Hot old"… (which is the good kind of old for them) …

scandalous beauty: joyce bryant - an analysis

“If I told people the truth about it [her rise to fame], they would think I made it all up.” - Joyce Bryant

This is another intriguing lady and one of my biggest muses ever. I’ve been wanting to cover her ever since I saw her. A smoking hot chanteuse of the 1950s supper club circuit, she became an early African-American sex symbol, so much so, that she was actually banned from radio for being too sexy. With the perfect hourglass figure, backless dresses and silver tinted hair, jazz singer Joyce Bryant became known as “The Bronze Blonde Bombshell.” She was named by Ebony magazine as one of the five most beautiful black women in the world along with Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt, and Dorothy Dandridge (don’t know who the fifth one was). However, the wildly beautiful Bryant, also known as the “black Marilyn Monroe”, never achieved Eartha Kitt or Lena Horne popularity. Although the Oakland, California native was raised in a strict Seventh Day Adventist home, she made her way to the stage in 1940. It was there she gained national and international acclaim for her stunning looks, earthy, sultry tone and figure flattering costumes. (It was rumored that Bryant’s dresses were so tight that she had to be carried off stage at the end of her performances.) The magnetism of Bryant’s personality, her sex appeal, her physical appearance as well as the duality of her elegantly-torrid stage persona were all wrapped up in a package that was mesmerizing and legendary. But while these attributes propelled her to fame in nightclubs and magazines, she struggled with discrimination, censorship, debt, drug addiction, and, as a devout Christian, religious guilt. She had a surprisingly short reign (through her own design), but the supper club chanteuse is still fondly remembered. Often woefully and inaccurately miscategorized as a "quitter," extensive research uncovers a rather different tale of a woman who succeeded in reinventing herself as an artist on her own terms - refusing to be a victim of the entertainment machine. She’s not the “lost diva” as some proclaim; she’s the one that got away.

Joyce Bryant, according to astrotheme, was a Libra sun and Gemini moon (the moon is speculative). She was born Ione Emily Joyce Bryant in Oakland, California. Her father, Whitfield, worked as a chef for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Her mother, Dorthy Constance Withers, was a devout Seventh-day Adventist. Her maternal grandfather, Frank Withers, was an early jazz trombonist. Raised in San Francisco, she was the oldest of eight children. Bryant, a quiet child raised in a strict home, had ambitions of becoming a sociology teacher. She moved to Los Angeles to live with cousins when she was in her late teens. The move came after a disastrous marriage; she eloped at 14 but the marriage ended on the wedding night without consummation. It was later annulled. As a teenager on a visit to a cousin, she joined a sing-along with other patrons at a local club. No sooner had she opened her mouth than everyone became silent, impressed by her four-octave voice. She was immediately offered a job at the club as a singer. Soon she left the club and went to other clubs, slowly building a reputation and a following. By the middle of the 1950s, Bryant was a star not only becasue of her voice, but because of her uncommon beauty, and her image as a kooky, dreamy woman. Like her contemporary Marilyn Monroe, she exuded sex. Sometimes when she sang, she was cool and relaxed about sexual matters, her tones mellow. But other times, she was a steamy performer, belting out provocative hits like “Love For Sale” and “Drunk With Love”. Her act was outrageously sexy; she wore provocative, tight, backless, cleavage-revealing mermaid dresses that left little to imagine and they were so tight, she had to be carried off-stage. Onstage, Bryant burned up so much energy, twisting, gyrating, and shaking and violently slashing and punching at the air with her arms that she was said to lose four pounds a performance.

One night, she found herself appearing on the same bill as Josephine Baker; terrified of competing with a legend and not wanting to be upstaged, Bryant doused her hair with silver radiator paint, painted her nails silver, slithered into a tight silver dress with a silver floor-length mink and stole the show. Even Baker was impressed and she gave Bryant a nod as she passed her in the hallway. Bryant’s silvery blond hair inspired legendary singer Etta James (another California girl) to copy the blond hair image later. With the gimmick and the voice, Bryant soon was earning $2,500-$3,500 a performance, eventually earning $150,000 a year, an astronomical sum in those days. She was also one of the few black entertainers to appear in major magazines. Life magazine, for example, profiled her in 1953. In 1955, her career abruptly ended. After a performance she was physically assaulted because she refused sexual advances. She also abused prescription pills in order to sleep, her hair was damaged from intensive colouring, and she had to resort to wigs after a disastrous bleaching. By the end of 1955 when her multiple performances had exhausted her throat, a doctor suggested spraying cocaine to soothe the pain even though the procedure might make Bryant addicted. When her then-manager expressed disinterest in her well-being by encouraging her to do it, she fired him and subsequently quit performing. At age 28, Bryant walked away from her entertainment career and enrolled in a Seventh Day Adventist college in Huntsville, Alabama.    

In the 1960s, disillusioned again from religion, Bryant returned to the stage. Now under the training of Frederick Wilkerson of Howard University, she sang opera. She worked as a vocal instructor and periodically performed with the Watergate Symphony in Washington, D.C., the New York City Center Opera Company and various European opera companies. Today, at 94 years old, she lives with Alzheimer’s and is taken care of by her niece.

Joyce Bryant, internationally noted nightclub and opera singer with a four-octave range, had a Seventh-day Adventist background. After a meteoric rise to fame as a nightclub singer in the late 1940s, she had a conversion experience in 1955 and then worked in the church for the rest of the decade, singing in evangelistic meetings and serving as a Bible worker. She left the church in the 1960s and eventually resumed singing in nightclubs until her retirement.

Joyce was born in Oakland, California,  and raised in San Francisco, the oldest of eight children. Her mother was a churchgoing Adventist and her father a railroad chef who was seldom at home. Following an unconsummated marriage at age fourteen, she moved to Los Angeles to live with cousins.

Bryant began singing at clubs in the Los Angeles area in the late 1940s. She soon gained a reputation for outrageous behavior and provocative clothing, colored her hair with silver radiator paint, and became known as the "bronze bombshell," and the "black Marilyn Monroe."

She was earning as much as $150,000 a year, had been featured in a 1953 issue of Life magazine, and was appearing regularly in African-American magazines when, deeply troubled about her image and the sordid nightclub scene, she abruptly joined the Adventist church in 1955. She enrolled at Oakwood College, now University, that fall. Ebony, the most widely circulated African-American magazine in the U.S., ran a five-page feature article on her conversion in its May 1956 issue titled "The New World of Joyce Bryant." According to the church's primary publication, Review and Herald, the piece accurately described the church's doctrines and pictured her life on campus in a favorable light.

In 1957 Bryant became a Bible instructor in the Allegheny Conference, a regional black conference, initially working in related Washington, D.C., area churches. In 1958 she and Richard Penniman (Little Richard), a recently converted pop music superstar, worked with E. E. Cleveland, famed black evangelist, in a twelve-week series in Washington, D.C. The write-up about that event in the September 11, 1958, Review and Herald, related the following:

The last night of the series will long be remembered by those in attendance. Two former stars of show business, Joyce Bryant and "Little Richard" Penniman, said to be the creator of rock and roll, boldly witnessed to the saving power of God.

As Miss Bryant, who has been billed at the nightspots of two continents, told of her struggles to get away from God, many felt the tears rolling down their cheeks. Two months ago her former booking agent offered her $200,000, tax free, if she would take the leading role in a picture to be made. In relating this experience Miss Bryant said, "Peace of mind, and the knowledge of working with God in saving the souls of men, bring more comfort and lasting joy than all the money and glamour."

The fond title “Little Richard,” a name Richard Penniman acquired when he began to sing as a small boy, still follows him.  Tops in his field when he was twenty-four years of age, he gave a glowing account of GodÂ’s power to save him from sin. He explained that he had made as much as $10,000 a day, but was glad to lay it aside as nothing compared with what Jesus had done for him. . . . When the one-time rock-and-roller called his former fans from the audience to gather around the pulpit, more than 300 responded.  He prayed a touching prayer for them.

Both Joyce Bryant and Richard Penniman have taken training at Oakwood College and are now engaged in soul-winning work.

Bryant left the church shortly after this because of false accusations about her and, following study with a voice teacher at Howard University, worked in touring foreign opera companies, singing music in the classical repertoire in the 1960s, before returning to the nightclub scene and singing on cruise ships. The behavior, dress, and appearance associated with her earlier days of singing were discarded, however, as she resumed singing in these venues.

Because of her talent, Bryant was able to help break racial barriers, gaining access to the most prominent stages in popular music performance. Along the way, she endured her share of indignities, including being burned in effigy when she stayed and sang in a Miami hotel. Martin Luther King, Jr., nationally famous civil rights pioneer, particularly enjoyed her singing and, following Sunday services, she would often join King and his family for dinner at an Atlanta, Georgia, restaurant. It wasn’t until I started converting to Judaism that I realized that anti-Semitism is very much alive and well — and it’s only getting worse.

Last year saw the most anti-Semitic incidents in 40 years, according to the Anti-Defamation League. While the numbers aren’t yet in for 2020, there have been anti-Semitic events every month of the year so far.

And yet, when I talk to my family about anti-Semitism and why I don’t feel safe here in America anymore, they don’t quite understand.

I don’t expect them to, either. If you have never been discriminated against for your identity, then you simply can’t comprehend how it could happen to others, either. You don’t know how scary and powerless you feel when people say they hate you.

Growing up in a white home in a predominantly white neighborhood in Baltimore, I never once faced racism or any form of discrimination. My family and I pretty much looked like everyone else. We could blend in and there were no differences between the people in our community and us.

On the other hand, in high school, when my mom moved us to Pikesville, a predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, I noticed that they looked different from us right away. Mostly, I’d see them on Saturdays, wearing all black and pushing baby strollers. The only thoughts that crossed my mind were, “Wow, Jewish people walk a lot,” and “They must be really hot in that dark clothing.”

Unlike my mom and I, they couldn’t hide who they were.

Today, I’m one of those Jews walking on Shabbat around my neighborhood, which is a little frightening nowadays. But the few times when I have experienced real anti-Semitism, ironically, have occurred when I wasn’t easily identifiable as an Orthodox Jew. Like the time my landlord told me her father used to “Jew people down,” or when my Uber driver said Jews control the world and like to make little children into matzoh ball soup (really!). The topic came up because we were driving through a predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Los Angeles and he spotted some haredi Jews.  

(...) It took me a while to get to this place, though. I didn’t want to comment on anti-Semitism because I didn’t want to seem like I was being dramatic. One thing that anti-Semites say online is that anti-Semitism doesn’t actually exist, and Jews make it up or are exaggerating it.

(...) This summer, I witnessed #JewishPrivilege shift from an anti-Semitic hashtag on Twitter to one where Jews were sharing their anti-Semitic trauma. I shared the landlord and Uber stories, and also posted, “#JewishPrivilege is when a Hollywood agent yelled at my husband, a comedian, for taking off Jewish holidays because ‘You can’t do that in this business!’” and “#JewishPrivilege is having to hire an armed guard for our synagogue because Jews were massacred in Pittsburgh and Poway.”

I received more engagement than I’ve ever achieved on the platform. One person told me “F— Israel” and another called me a “heathen” for converting. But overall, I found massive support from non-Jews and Jews alike, with many retweeting me and agreeing with what I had said. It empowered me to keep tweeting about anti-Semitism.

(...) Unfortunately, a lot of non-Jews think that anti-Semitism is a thing of the past that died with the Holocaust and society has advanced since then. I certainly did before I converted. But when talking about anti-Semitism in the classroom, it has to go way beyond the Holocaust so people can very much realize it’s alive and well today.

Recently, a teenager asked my husband to take off his hat so he could see if he had horns. Maybe if that teen had gotten a better education on anti-Semitism, he would have thought twice before saying that.

When I talk to my family about how America is quickly becoming like Europe before the Holocaust and how I want to move to Israel one day, they say “Really?” and find it hard to believe.

“Why would you move so far away?” they ask. I tell them I want to survive. I send them news articles to back up my claims. I hope they’re beginning to understand. I hope they see that Pittsburgh and Poway were not isolated incidents but indicative of a bigger issue going on.

It may seem dramatic, but I’m OK with being dramatic now. I’m not going to apologize for bringing up the trauma I’ve experienced. That’s not my job. I’m done with feeling powerless.

If our collective chorus gets louder and louder, and we tell our non-Jewish friends and family about anti-Semitism, they may just start to understand — and become valuable allies in the process.

So I'm of the mind that Raleigh is a great place to live. It has my favorite things, my favorite people, and I'm too broke to move anywhere else.

Raleigh works for me, but I recognize it doesn't work for everyone. Some people had less than ideal childhoods and wanna escape the state ASAP, some just want to live closer to their dream jobs or have new opportunities. That's all fine, but what if this describes where you are now?

What if, for the sake of argument, you're outside of NC and wanna move in? Moving is expensive, time-consuming, and risky at the best of times; so you wanna make sure that wherever you're landing is at least as good as where you started 90% of the time

"But RL," I hear you say, "you make Raleigh sound like an idyllic dreamscape populated with parks and a diverse kumbayah of peoples living in harmony"

I do talk about Raleigh in a positive light but, like a life saving medicine flavored like ass, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

So before you spend thousands of dollars on moving vans, boxes, and grits; here's a crash course on what it's like living in a Raleigh apartment, coming from someone whose majority of Raleigh Living (heh) has been in apartments.

First off, location. Any realtor will tell you that location is 80% of the sale to sound profound, and as anyone who has lived in the middle of ass-backward nowhere can tell you: It sucks having to drive 30 minutes to go anywhere.

Good news: With the Raleigh Beltline and connecting roads, there are very few places in Raleigh where your trip will last longer than thirty minutes one-way. Bad News: where you set down still matters because cutting down on travel is important for car and mental health.

North Raleigh is different from south Raleigh is different from northwest Raleigh, and the locals aren't the only difference you'll find between locations. Each segment of Raleigh has something to offer, with easier access to some attractions than others and neighboring cities for when you need something outside the RDU area.

Using downtown as the center of our wheel, people generally divide Raleigh into North and South Raleigh (with distinction given for NW, SE, NE, etc when needed). N.Raleigh is considered generally more upscale, a slice of suburban living interspersed with plenty of shopping centers for families and the moderately wealthy; but it's boring as all hell.

Want some fun? Excitement in the evenings and a more traditional urban experience with bars, night clubs, strip clubs, and more? South Raleigh is your best bet, at the cost of being the "sketchy" side of Raleigh. That kind of place where you'll see a bunch of auto shops that look abandoned but haven't been closed in the past 5 years and there's at least one customer from time to time.

Of course, this is a lot of generalizing but you'll find that it's still mostly accurate. The main exception in this is Capital Blvd, a highway cutting across north and south Raleigh on the eastern half of the city; a high crime corridor that's undergoing some changes in the northern half that have (somewhat) reduced crime but most people will still associate that area with the majority of Raleigh's crime and debauchery.

More importantly, is the distinction Raleigh citizens put on inside the beltline versus outside the beltline. The I-440 and 540 highways that wrap around Downtown form the mythical beltline, and to a degree what you have access to. Inside the beltline is the majority of workplaces, stores, and shopping centers; while outside you'll still have these things just to a more... dispersed extent.

North Raleigh actually kinda exemplifies this perfectly. Living inside the beltline, you have access to places like North Hills, Crabtree Valley mall, and Triangle Town Center. Live outside the beltline, like I currently am, and you're looking at 10 to 15 minutes to the nearest sheetz for that late night double hot dog fix.

So for point one: How important is it that you're near things? The majority of apartments and rental properties are in or around the belt-line, but if you want to save some cash on rent checks the cheaper properties are gonna extend your trips a bit.

Next, what can you expect in terms of neighbors? Does Raleigh have a hip party scene full of teens renting cheap apartments and blasting trap music at 3AM?

Depends on where you live

I swear not every point is going to be this, but there's an important distinction this time that affects the type of people your complex will likely have surrounding you; are you in North or South Raleigh?

North Raleigh has a ton of pre-schools, k-12 public schools (Leesville, Hillburn, Lead Mine, just to name a few), and office complexes that make up the job market. As a result the majority of apartment renters in north Raleigh tend to be families with a few small kids or so.

As a result, living off of Glenwood North and Edwards Mill I never had any noise problems from neighbors, the worst being kids playing outside at 3PM sounding like they were being murdered (which apparently is a common thing and I apologize to any neighbors I frightened with ghastly shrieks).

What I did have a problem with, however, was the typical Karen's you hear people complain about online. Renting a property now, we have access to our neighborhood's NextDoor page and it's hilarious sometimes to go on and read the comments, but living at a certain property we had a sort of mini-Facebook for residents

That thing was always full of either people who were moving out looking to sell their furniture or people passive-aggressively challenging each other/the apartment managers with comments about things happening around the complex.

Once I logged in to see one man accuse another, without ever actually accusing someone specific ("I know who did it and they should be ashamed" type post) of putting glass beer bottles under the tires of his truck to try and puncture them. Everyone acts civil in public, but then online they'll stir the pot harder than a chef with a hand mixer.

South Raleigh, you have the schools like Shaw University, Meredith, and NCSU; so the people renting down there are typically college kids. You'll see more apartments that cater towards them like University Village or University Woods, but sometimes these places will cater to both college kids and working adults

Avoid these places like the plague, because despite sometimes having a lower cost to live there the neighbors and their shenanigans will drive you up the wall (unless you're the type to join in, then go wild).

I've had friends stay at places like University Village and The Proper (formerly The Vie, formerly Wolf Creek) who've shared horror stories. 3AM parties ending in property damage or vomit in inconvenient places, drug deals not even trying to be subtle, and maintenance workers doing nothing because regardless of the apartment conditions; no school's gonna pull their contract with them unless news articles start getting written.

Otherwise, south Raleigh apartments are largely like north Raleigh apartments; except the crime rate tends to be a little higher and you'll run into more singles and people working full time.

Otherwise, Raleigh apartment culture is like apartment culture anywhere else in the country. You have a mix of apartments catering to those just looking to live versus more ostentatious luxury apartments with fancy pools, exercise facilities, and tech packages to draw people in.

If you're renting in Raleigh, however, do try to get a roommate or two if you can manage. Even with a decent job paying 800+ on a one bedroom one bath apartment can be exhausting at best, but with even one other person that can functionally halve your expenses

So if you're a young professional, or a student, or even if you have a small family, I can safely recommend renting in Raleigh. There's plenty of places that'll accommodate you, and cater towards your needs.

But what about everyone else? Are there people who shouldn't rent in Raleigh?

No

But there are groups who I'd seriously ask to consider their other choices before picking Raleigh as a destination for their new home.

For instance, are you a member of the LGBT community? A trans or non-binary individual? Well then, first off, I want you to know that you're loved and valid. I'm accepting of who you are and appreciate everyone's right to identify how they choose, but I'm not everyone.

Raleigh's bluer than other parts of North Carolina, as I've stated in other blog write-ups, but it's still part of North Carolina unfortunately and as a result, you'll face some challenges.

I doubt anyone's gonna burn a cross in your yard or knock over your mailbox, but Raleigh doesn't offer LGBT protections for housing, jobs, or credit/lending discriminations according to the Movement Advancement Project's website.

We have support organizations for LGBT and NB individuals, plenty of high schools and colleges have Gay-Straight Alliance clubs, and there are numerous businesses downtown that cater specifically to those individuals... but we're also the state that got into a lot of hot water because of a stupid bathroom bill, and our politicians are trying to pass anti-trans sports legislation (because they now magically care about the integrity of womens sports).

By that measure, but to a lesser extent, if you fall outside the Liberal/Conservative political spectrum then be prepared to have no one to discuss your politics with outside of a few sparse networks like the DSA.

Additionally, if you don't have someone to room with or a significant other to split costs with; you may want to try searching somewhere a little cheaper.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Raleigh housing prices aren't terrible for a major metropolitan city, but we're not the best prices in the world.

You can get prices on apartments and rentals lower than say, California or New York. However, compared to other parts of NC like Greensboro or Garner; rentals are still a bit much.

On average, a Raleigh apartment can run you about $900 for a single bedroom and a single bathroom. You can find cheaper, but often times there's some risk associated (Crime levels, quality of the room, quality of the property manager, etc.) Looking for a two bedroom? Then your average price is gonna jump up to around $1,200, and this is all before utilities and cable come into play.

It's true a lot of companies around here will pay more than the $7.25 minimum wage, but most low-skilled jobs will pay around 10-11 an hour.

I guess though, that's kind of an obvious statement. "Don't live in Raleigh if you can't afford to live in Raleigh."

I might expand on these thoughts at a later time, but hopefully for now I've given you some food for thought; or at the very least an entertaining read for a few minutes.

I love my city, and I love the friends I've made in it, but the sad truth is that nowhere is perfect for everyone; leastways Raleigh. If Raleigh sounds like the kind of place you'd like to live in, at least take a day trip to come visit and see how things go that way. Visit some stores, meet some locals, and form an opinion off of more than travel blogs and youtube videos.

The Gender Spectrum: Making the Case to Cisgender People - Part 1: Learn

Introduction

I wish I could write just one paragraph on this topic, and call it done. Because it is a simple concept: accept other people for who they are without judgement, and let them live their lives in peace and according to their own values and goals. However, I am seeing a lot of misunderstanding on the gender spectrum and transgender equality, and it is going to require further discussion to help us all be more educated on the matter. Thus, I have written this essay, broken into parts for focus and ease of digestion. Allow me to explain all the nuances of transgender equality, as succinctly and compassionately (for all parties) as possible.

My name is Erin. I am a woman, a wife, a mother, a sister, and a daughter. I chose those gender-specific words because they match my gender identity. I was born as female, and I identify as female. But this is not everyone’s story. Not everyone’s gender identity fits neatly into a little box labeled “female” or “male.” (I will get to the explanation of how this can all make sense for you, but stick with me.) If you’re like me, that is cisgender (meaning you identify as the gender which matches your biological sex), then I hope you’ll read what I have to say. You might need to hear from someone like yourself to really start to understand why transgender rights is so important in our times - and beyond just understanding it, to become an advocate for the greater LGBTQ community and help others who might be (either intentionally or inadvertently) continuing to harass, berate, and marginalize a group of people already experiencing deep-seated, systemic, and pervasive discrimination. Truly, they need our support!

If you are frustrated or uncomfortable with the topic of transgender equality and the gender spectrum, it is likely because you lack clarity on the issues and/or personal connection to the LGBTQ community. Your best response to these feelings is to 1) acknowledge them, 2) check that your emotional response is not harming others, and 3) learn more about the topic. 

First then, before we get into the details on the gender spectrum, I would like to address and acknowledge your feelings. Most importantly, I would like you to acknowledge your feelings on the topic. Phrases such as transgender, the gender spectrum, and gender non-binary might feel confusing or frustrating to you, alienating, foreign, scary, weird, off-putting, uncomfortable. You might feel defensive about making mistakes regarding one’s gender identity because it’s a hot topic, and you feel like you’re trying to be respectful, but you just don’t fully understand it. Your feelings are valid! You are entitled to be shocked and bewildered by novel concepts. We, as humans, fear the unknown; it’s in our DNA. New ideas are scary. Change is freaking hard. 

So let’s all feel validated in our emotional reaction. But we must recognize that those feelings are on us. They are our responsibility to work through, and we shouldn’t expect LGBTQ folks to fix it for us or make it less confusing. And we definitely must not discriminate against them or treat them differently from anyone else just because we don’t understand their circumstances. We cannot let our confused (and for some, even hate-filled) emotional response further disrupt the treacherous road for transgender people by spreading hate, misinformation, phobias, and bigotry. We are each responsible for doing the necessary work to better understand this marginalized group. 

Let me be clear - I’m not placing blame on any one individual. I’m not here to “out” you or shame you for your beliefs if you’ve had any negative or judgmental thoughts about transgender folks. But I absolutely do think it is every cisgender person’s responsibility to help right the wrong that our society has done to transgender people. And that’s the whole point of why I’m writing about this. I want to appeal to your sense that loving your neighbor makes the world a better place, even if your neighbor is completely different from you. Even if they are transgender. And even if you have never met a transgender person - you probably will at some point, and my goal is to help you accept them, advocate for them, before you even meet.

I implore all of us to respond to our own uninformed perspective with acknowledgment of our lack of information. We’re all so addicted to blasting our staunch opinions nonstop onto social media that we don’t stop and ask ourselves what we know about a topic before expressing our very formed opinion on the matter. We all need to be saying more often: “I don’t have an opinion on that because I don’t really know much about it.” How refreshing would it feel to hear people reserve judgement and admit lack of insight? Furthermore, one’s opinion means absolutely nothing if it is solely driven by emotion. Opinions ought to have a foundation of information and facts. 

Consider this scenario for a moment: You have a toothache. You tell your best friend, who looks in your mouth, and proclaims: “You have a cavity! I’m sure of it.” Do you believe them? If your friend is a dentist, maybe you can count on their expertise to provide an opinion of value. But if your friend isn’t a dentist, then he or she is - they are - merely speaking with an uninformed opinion. Ask yourself: “Do I listen to people who speak with uninformed opinions?” I certainly hope we would all trust a dentist to advise us on our tooth health over a non-dentist best friend. But at least, if we listened to the non-dentist, we wouldn’t be willfully enabling the discrimination of an entire group of people. Unfortunately, trusting our own uninformed opinion on transgender folks is, in fact, doing great harm to other people, and we need to start looking at our own words and actions in this way, especially if you have ever shared something online that could be considered anti-LGBTQ.

Knowledge is power because it is the antidote to fear and ignorance. If our goal is to feel less afraid, less uncomfortable, to change our negative emotion to a positive one, then our response should be to start learning. Learn! Find someone who you can talk to openly about gender issues. Ask questions. Listen. Be respectful. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to someone directly, then read about it. Read stories about trans people written by trans people. Watch documentaries about LGBTQ teens, told from their perspective and in their words. Learn about families with two dads. Make sure you’re reading the accounts as told by the people themselves and not a cisgender perspective because it might be skewed or have a motive beyond simply sharing a story. Have an open mind to the notion that your current stance on this matter might not be best for humanity. That’s okay because we all have the capacity to evolve and change our minds!

At this point, you might be wondering why a cisgender woman is writing on this topic. Please consider me a bridge - a bridge from a place where transgender seems alien to the point of confusion and even fear, to the other side where you are starting to understand the gender spectrum and ready to start reading and learning from LGBTQ people themselves. I’m just gearing you up for the real deal. One step at a time. Here we go!

Wrong Conclusions Chapter one: Clandestine Farewells

She had smiled through the whole thing.

She had smiled when Raven had defeated Trigon. She had smiled when she saw her dear friend in a white cloak back, now in her older form. She had smiled when she saw Raven hug her other dear friend, Robin. She had still smiled when she saw Beast Buy hugging Raven next. Even back in the Titan Tower, she had smiled throughout the whole celebration for having their teammate back, and the Earth having been returned back to normal. She had even smiled while noticing that Robin and Raven were having an intimate talk.

She had smiled the whole time.

But as the door to her room slid shut, Starfire finally had a chance to lean her back against the wall and allowed the tears to flow down her cheeks. Oh, she was still smiling, but now it was a bitter-sweet smile of defeat. And it turned into a scowl within moments.

Starfire really was ecstatic that Raven was back, that wasn't the problem! What bothered the poor Tamaranian more than anything was the fact that Raven and Robin were now, once again, close. True, the two had always gotten along better than most of the other Titans - especially after Raven had been within Robin's mind. But when they had hugged, Robin had not pulled away from Raven in the same manner he always had from Starfire. Around the Tamaranian, Robin had always been oddly quiet and had always gotten very angry and tacit after she did anything affectionate. Seeing Raven being allowed to get that close to Robin was simply too much for Starfire to bear.

And what hurt Starfire most as her back pressed into the wall, allowing the tears to roll down her cheeks, was that she was happy for them. She loved Raven and Robin very dearly, and wasn't about to try and stand in their way. If the two had such feelings for each other, Starfire was going to allow everything to run its course, even if it meant giving up on Robin. She wanted both friends to be happy, even if it tore her up on inside.

Starfire tried to wipe the hot tears away from her face but merely caused herself more discomfort. She had wiped her face with her forearm, around which her armor was clasped, and the cold suddenly contacting with her face caused a shiver of discomfort to run down her spine. She gave a choked sob, allowing her mind to wander to her sad thoughts of defeat once more.

Starfire had almost always had feelings for Robin, for as long as she could remember. He had always been very kind to her, even if he didn't baby her in battle. Rightfully so, considering Starfire's immense strength and endurance; she would have felt he was thinking little of her if he had tried to protect her during fights. But it was because Robin had always been so kind to her that Starfire had though she had a chance with him.

That thought had only been reinforced when Robin had acted very ashamed during his forced date with that treacherous 'Kitten' girl. And again, when he had stopped Starfire's sister from taking Starfire's place in the Teen Titans. Then again, when he had helped stop Starfire's arranged marriage on Tamaran to that unfortunate blob her sister had found for her. All of these actions had caused Starfire to have stronger and stronger feelings for him, and she believed that he had felt the same about her. After Robin had mentioned the difficulty he had speaking of feelings, Starfire had decided to take things one step at a time and wait for a day when Robin was ready to bring up the subject of his own accord.

But apparently, Starfire had waited too long. And for this, she simply loathed herself.

Slowly, as Starfire's gasps for breath became less strangled, she realized something that made her feel even more foolish than before.

So what if she hadn't said anything to Robin? If he felt that strongly about Raven, it merely meant he didn't feel such a way about her. Starfire couldn't, for a moment, imagine Robin being the sort who could harbot feeling for two beings at once. So, she had merely saved herself a very embarrassing conversation and weeks of awkward glances.

Starfire gave a small laugh, at last finding the bright side she had so hoped for. "W-Well, it appears as though this particular t-time I am not victorious," she told herself in a half-joking but still extremely bitter manner as she crossed her arms over her chest. She had won so many battles for the Titans just with her strength alone that losses were rare experiences for her.

Starfire thought of how now, she could still talk the way she always had with Robin without any awkward feelings, and of the happiness he would one-day obtain when he and Raven told one another of their emotions. Surprising as it was, it was happy enough of a thought to allow the Tamaranian to hover off of the ground and over to her bed.

So, she couldn't get Robin. Oh, well. She could focus more on her other friends and focus on getting stronger in battle. She was a hero on Earth, and people depended on her! Romance wasn't something she needed; heck, it may have even gotten in her way.

She thought again of the vision of Raven and Robin hugging the way they had. Starfire gave a small giggle, now feeling mildly better about it in her head. Her heart ached as though it had been ripped in two, but the gladness Starfire felt inside of her head was enough to let her push that part of her feelings aside. The two did make for an interesting couple. And now she'd have more time to get to know Cyborg and Beast Boy. She had fought along-side both of them during their battle with Trigon, and knew little to nothing of them! At least, compared to Robin and Raven.

All Starfire knew of Cyborg was that half of him was apparently this thing called a 'machine'. Starfire did not understand the concept too well. The machines she had always dealt with could not think on their own, much less feel. There was much more to Cyborg than merely his mechanics, and she knew that he knew the same pain of discrimination as she did. She regretted never taking the time to share more experiences with him.

Beast Boy was another mystery to her. Before Terra came into their lives, Beast Boy had always been funny and lazy, trying to ignore any responsibility he could. He spoke like most the human 'surfers' of the Earth did, and yet he didn't look human at all. He had always made jokes and bothered Raven, and every one of the Titans had always thought of him as someone who wore his emotions on his sleeves, including Starfire. But after Terra's betrayal, a new side of Beast Boy had been exposed. He had true passion in his heart and risked everything for someone the other Titans no longer trusted, and he managed to bring out the good in her one final time.

Starfire's lids suddenly became heavy as she closed her bright-green eyes, hearing voices not too far away from her door. Unlike Robin's and Raven's rooms, her door was left rather thin, so that she could hear if trouble was beginning to stir.

Starfire smiled, recognizing the voices of her fellow Titans. Raven and Robin had already headed to their separate rooms, so it was only Beast Boy and Cyborg left in the hallway.

"So, up for a game of Stank-Ball, BB? I choked down some of your stupid tofu-bacon, I owe you a good butt-whooping for that," Cyborg's low and playful voice rumbled. Starfire could sense the stench of the 'Stank-Ball' even through her door.

"...No thanks, dude," Beast Boy's voice came, accompanied by a small, forced laugh and a very fake and unconvincing yawn. "I think I'm gonna call it a night. After fightin' myself for almost a whole day, I think it's only right I caught up on some Z's before I make up for all my lost couch-time. 'Sides, shouldn't you recharge, too?"

"Alright, if you're so scared of losing," Cyborg taunted, but the sound of his heavy footsteps was heard afterward. Beast Boy's light footsteps followed a moment later, along with the sounds of his door sliding closed.

Starfire closed her eyes, allowing the welcoming feeling of sleep to over-take her. True, it was very uncomfortable for her to sleep in her uniform, much less her armor, but all of the emotions she had felt that day, along with the exhausting battle with her alter-ego, caused Starfire to be completely drained of energy. With a small sigh of 'Farewell, Robin...' Starfire allowed sleep to take over her exhausted body.

As Starfire accepted everything and allowed sleep to take over, another Titan had his emotions rattled in a similar manner, if not to a more serious extent. He walked over to his bed, sitting down on the bottom rather than top bunk, and merely stared at the ground with a blank expression on his face. Beast Boy was in a state of shock, still unable to comprehend all of the sudden grief he was feeling.

He had been just as happy as the other Titans the whole time, after all, why shouldn't he have been? Raven was back and free of Trigon's control, everyone was alive, he had hugged Raven, she acted the same as always by asking him to flake off - everything was back to normal.

Beast Boy's eyes narrowed as he finally accepted a small truth. Everything ISN'T back to normal...

He balled his hands into fists and stood as a wave of rage suddenly washed over him. Without thinking or realizing what was happening, Beast Boy began picking up things in his room and throwing them at walls. He threw his action figures, his chairs, his empty food containers - everything he could have gotten his hands on. Beast Boy had learned from the chemical reaction he had had when Adonis had pushed him into those toxins that nobody could hear him breaking things in his room; his walls were very sound proof. He had only acted in a similar manner once since that incident, and it had been after Raven had broken all the things he had made for her birthday.

After a few minutes of his items shattering and bursting apart, Beast Boy finally calmed down, breathing very heavily. He clutched the lamp he had been preparing to throw tightly in his fist, wondering if he should throw it afterall or not. After a moment of consideration, the green teenager merely set the lamp back down on his nightstand and fell back into his bottom bunk.

Beast Boy felt dizzy. His heart was pounding in anger and frustration, but his eyes stung as they were quickly welling up with tears. He couldn't believe it! He had gotten his hopes up so high after Terra was no more, only to get them stepped on!

He placed his forearm over his eyes, to shield them from the light of his window. It didn't help him any, though. Beast Boy still saw everything that had happened the day, as though it were a movie being shown on the back of his eyelids.

Raven didn't care about him. She didn't care about him in the least. When Trigon had thrown them all to the ground, she had stood over him for a few moments, looking frantic. Beast Boy's heart had leaped, hoping she was going to help him to his feet. But no. No, she ran right to Robin and kept telling him, and only him, to get up, as though the other Titans were nothing.

And then, after Trigon was defeated, she had hugged Robin without a second thought. And after Beast Boy had made it clear he wanted the old Raven back and tried to hug her as well, she had snapped at him. Once in the Tower, she had stuck to Robin, and only Robin. Again. The two had been speaking as though they were lovers behind everyone else's backs - Beast Boy had seen more than enough movies to recognize that.

Beast Boy tried to let out a steadied breath, but it ended up a rattled choke instead. He remained on his bottom bunk for what felt like must have been hours, taking all the jabs of emotions he was suddenly feeling. Beast Boy felt jealous of Robin for being so close to Raven, he was angry at Raven for not caring about him, he loathed Trigon for causing Raven and Robin to grow that much closer, he felt sick with himself for having such negative feelings towards his friends, but most of all, Beast Boy was just...confused.

Why did he feel like this? Raven was so creepy, and he knew that. Sure, he worried about her, but...but she was just another Titan, right? A creepy, half-demon Teen Titan. Yeah, there had been times when he had felt close to her, as though she had even understood him, but that was just because she wasn't allowed to show emotions. Raven had to suppress her emotions, kind of similar to Beast Boy. Though Beast Boy didn't hide them - he merely masked them with a smile or a bad joke, but it was the same thing. It was bottling up pain and frustration inside until it finally burst. They both understood that.

The more Beast Boy thought about it, the more he realized how he and Raven were alike. Sure, she liked poetry, and he liked video games, but what they felt was similar. Both of them didn't want to bother the others with their problems. Neither one liked to be bothered when they were doing something solitary. And most importantly, both of them knew the feeling of having their hearts ripped out and stepped on. For Raven, it had been Malchior, and for Beast Boy, it had been Terra.

Malchior...The mere memory of the name caused Beast Boy's blood to turn to boiling oil. What he had done to Raven was simply sick and wrong. Sure, Raven was quiet, but using her in such a way caused Beast Boy's skin to crawl. Raven deserved better than that! She may not have been a beauty queen, but there was something alluring about her gothic appearance. And she was very smart, too; all she did was read! She had a taste for poetry, which proved she was cultured - not to mention how she had handled her life, always being told she would turn the world to dust, yet fighting to make it better, instead. She was impossibly strong for that. Raven deserved someone caring, someone fun, someone who saw how wonderful she was, someone who could appreciate her! Someone like Beast Boy!

The Changeling suddenly sat bolt upright in his bed with her eyes wide in horror. He...He hadn't just thought that. Sure, he liked Raven and everything but...but...

Oh, who was he kidding? He loved everything about her! The names she called him, that strand of hair that hung on one side of her face, that jewel in her forehead, the way she used her powers, the way she smelled, the way it took him months to get her to even crack a smile...Everything!

"Aw, man, I totally blew it..." Beast Boy groaned to himself, allowing himself to once again, fall onto the bottom bunk. "It's too late now...She digs Robin. If I weren't such a stupid-AUGH!" He punched his bedpost with the side of his fist, thankfully doing nothing more than causing his fist to throb in pain and Silkie to fall off from the top bunk.

Beast Boy let out a slow breath, rationalizing everything quickly in his head. Raven liked Robin, and Robin was one of his best buds - there would be no standing in their way. No running after Raven, no matter what. She was out of his league; Beast Boy had a better chance with CYBORG.

He turned around, smiling despite the sad look in his eyes. "Oh, well," He told himself. "Now I can focus on being less of a loser, and maybe find me a REAL babe. ...Goodbye, Raven," he whispered to himself before shutting his eyes and, a few moments later, beginning to emit a soft snore.

For anyone beginning to read this, you're in luck - I'm re-doing the story, making small edits, and forcing myself to re-read it so that I can continue. Hopefully, life doesn't get in the way and I'll manage to wrap this fanfic up, once and for all.

What is grey culture, precisely? Here’s what the stats say

Whiteness is hard to define, but apparently it involves lots of veggies, alcohol and the arts and reputations like Yoder

A few months after I moved to New York, a magical communication happened that would radically shift my psyche forever. I was telling my friend that I had gone to his favorite shop and he expected:” Who sufficed you? Was it the tall lily-white guy ?”

I frowned and replied,” Are the rest of the staff not grey ?” to which my friend responded” Huh? What do you necessitate? No. I was just describing him .”

While he strayed off to get a beer, I stood dumbfounded. This was the first time I had discovered a white person’s hasten used as a casual descriptor, a simple phase of differentiation in what I perceive to be a grey nature.

As a Brit, I grew up in a country that was 86% white-hot, so “white” was the norm. That kid you were seeing in volumes like Roald Dahl’s was lily-white, unless you were told otherwise( which you never were ). The males paraded on the TV appearance Crimewatch were described as black when they were black, and short or towering or thin or fat once they are white.

Now I live in the United States, countries around the world that is 61% grey. Non-whiteness is much more visible here, and abruptly the distinguish of whiteness is very. But I’m still struggling to constitute the shift from my previous mindset, where grey is the default, the presume, the baseline. You don’t notice normalcy; you consider the divergences from it. So the word “white” could ever be hop-skip over as an adjective.

Now, “white” still feels like an absence: an absence of colour, an is a lack of food that is “different” and an is a lack of a mum who enunciates your mention differently from the room your friends do. But if my friend can use “white” as an adjective, then what exactly are they describing? What is grey culture, exactly?

I decided to find out by expecting the questions that I and many other non-white people have been asked over and over again. I looked for answers in data.

Q: What do white people dine? A: Vegetables.

The US Department of Agriculture’s latest data been demonstrated that the average lily-white American eats 16 lb more vegetables at home each year than do non-white Americans( that could add up to 112 medium-sized carrots, 432 cherry-red tomatoes, or God knows how much kale ).

The only thing that white people are likely to adore more than vegetables is dairy. White Americans chew 185 lb of dairy produces at home each year, are comparable to exactly 106 lb for pitch-black Americans.

But this isn’t just the result of our desires: all of these numbers are influenced by structural parts. For instance, fruit and vegetable uptake increases each time that a new supermarket is lent near to someone’s home, according to a 2002 study . That same study too found that grey Americans are four times more likely than pitch-black Americans to live in a census tract that has a supermarket.

Q: What do white people drink? A: Alcohol.

Almost a third of non-Hispanic greys had at least one heavy drinking day in the past year, according to the CDC. Only 16% of black Americans and 24% of Hispanic Americans said the same.

If you’re wondering which drinks white people are boozing, then you have the same question as a unit of researchers who followed 2,171 girls from the time they were 11 years old to the time the issue is 18. As per year extended, the researchers “ve noticed that” compared to the black girls, white-hot girlfriends imbibe a lot more wine-coloured( and beer, actually, and, er, hearts, more ).

Q: What’s a typical white-hot name? A: Joseph Yoder.

The Census Bureau did an analysis of 270 million people‘s last names to find those that are most likely to be held by particular hastens or ethnicities. Many of these last names have German and Jewish descents. Which seems to run counter to my ideology of lily-white culture being intangible- Jewish culture “re a long way from” it. Having experienced discrimination, and having a distinct, tangible culture is sufficient to potentially disqualify you as white, as some American Jewish beings themselves ask the question: ” Are Jews White ?”.

As for Joseph, well, the best data I could find was the most popular child refers rolled by the hasten or the ethnicity of the mother( no mention of the father so some of these Josephs are possibly mixed hasten ). Even then, the numbers are exclusively from New York and were collected from 2011 to 2014. Still, I found that the most common white appoints are Joseph, David, Michael, Jacob and Moshe( seven of the most common refers were male because people tend to be more creative when they’ve delivery a girl ).

Q: What do white people do for merriment? A: Enjoy the arts.

I turned to my esteemed colleague and friend Amanda and asked what she would like to know about white people. Amanda, herself a white person, replied:” Why do they affection guitars so much better ?” Alas, despite two hours of online research, I couldn’t experiment her speculation about musical instruments and hasten.( Although I did find out that bassoons are more popular with women than servicemen, which led me to a YouTube clip of the status of women playing the bassoon with specific comments that spoke” THIS is how you bassoon ��. It’s only 36 seconds, but recollect, this is a daily median, so that adds up to 219 times each year.

I double checked my findings against a 2015 report from the National Endowment for the Arts, which found that white-hot Americans were almost twice as likely as pitch-black or Hispanic Americans to have done at least one arts activity in the past year. Their definition of an artworks task was pretty broad- it included” jazz, classical music, opu, musical and non-musical plays, ballet, and visits to an art museum or gallery “.

These counts feel closely connected to home. When I was growing up, my family never set foot inside a museum, gallery or theatre. Not once. I didn’t think it was strange, I exactly thought it was like tripping in duos or taking coaches- specific activities reserved only for school trips.

And yet, despite having better access to these institutions, it seems like it’s some white people who seem to feel culturally deprived.

Remember Amanda? I mentioned her earlier- she’s my colleague with the disdain for guitars. In 2015, she interviewed black psychologists to ask their mind about Rachel Dolezal, a white-hot professor who intentionally misrepresented herself as an African American.

Anita Thomas, an assistant professor of counseling psychology at Loyola University, said:” In some paths it’s normal, but not at her age .” Thomas explained that numerous lily-white teens reacted similarly to Dolezal, attempting to take on what the fuck is perceived to be the types of another race while exploring their identities. Being “the other” sure as hell has its downsides, but it is about to change that not being “the other” does too- especially if you’re a teen.

” For white[ American] youth, “whos” disconnected from European patrimony or gift, it often feels like whiteness as a idea is empty ,” Thomas added in a quotation that has really protruded with me. It seems to tie together some disparate conceptions I have had on “white” as an adjective.

Dolezal was treated as if she were a “bizarre” outlier, but she’s part of a much bigger structure of white action. It includes Mezz Mezzrow, the 1930 s jazz musician who affirmed himself a” voluntary Negro” after marrying a black both women and selling marijuana. It includes the millions of white-hot Americans who take DNA tests and proudly reveal that they are in fact x percentage non -white. And it’s a structure that includes the grey Americans who listen to a” rights for whites” album that includes sungs designation Sons of Israel and Fetch the Noose. One reaction might seem ludicrous, the other frightening, but they are all eventually about meeting a concept of whiteness that isn’t empty.

But what does all that searching yield? I’m not sure I can answer the issues to” what is white culture ?” but I’m certain we should try. If whiteness takes no chassis, then the concrete organizations that shaped it( and often benefit from it) remain invisible very- the supermarkets, the unions, and the museums that stir these numbers what they are. If the “somethingness” of grey culture is never quite pinned down, it remains both” good-for-nothing, certainly” and” well, everything “.

If white culture remains vague, then it can lay claim to every recipe, every garment, every suggestion “thats really not” explicitly “non-white”. That would mean that my identity is just a summing-up, that my “non-whiteness” can only be understood as a subtraction from the totality of “whiteness”. I refuse to be a remainder.

Whiteness is hard to define, but apparently it involves lots of veggies, alcohol and the arts and reputations like Yoder

A few months after I moved to New York, a magical communication happened that would radically shift my psyche forever. I was telling my friend that I had gone to his favorite shop and he expected:” Who sufficed you? Was it the tall lily-white guy ?”

I frowned and replied,” Are the rest of the staff not grey ?” to which my friend responded” Huh? What do you necessitate? No. I was just describing him .”

While he strayed off to get a beer, I stood dumbfounded. This was the first time I had discovered a white person’s hasten used as a casual descriptor, a simple phase of differentiation in what I perceive to be a grey nature.

As a Brit, I grew up in a country that was 86% white-hot, so “white” was the norm. That kid you were seeing in volumes like Roald Dahl’s was lily-white, unless you were told otherwise( which you never were ). Now I live in the United States, countries around the world that is 61% grey. Non-whiteness is much more visible here, and abruptly the distinguish of whiteness is very. But I’m still struggling to constitute the shift from my previous mindset, where grey is the default, the presume, the baseline. You don’t notice normalcy; you consider the divergences from it. So the word “white” could ever be hop-skip over as an adjective.

I decided to find out by expecting the questions that I and many other non-white people have been asked over and over again. I looked for answers in data.

The US Department of Agriculture’s latest data been demonstrated that the average lily-white American eats 16 lb more vegetables at home each year than do non-white Americans( that could add up to 112 medium-sized carrots, 432 cherry-red tomatoes, or God knows how much kale ).

The only thing that white people are likely to adore more than vegetables is dairy. White Americans chew 185 lb of dairy produces at home each year, are comparable to exactly 106 lb for pitch-black Americans.

But this isn’t just the result of our desires: all of these numbers are influenced by structural parts. For instance, fruit and vegetable uptake increases each time that a new supermarket is lent near to someone’s home, according to a 2002 study . Her feet bled, she was rapidly losing weight, and yet she continued journeying blindly towards a potential fatality, in fear of disappointing herself.

In her darkest moments, which she recalls with a sad smile, she remembers only a blurry sense of chaos. Weighing in at a meagre twenty-nine kilograms, she was in a precariously life-threatening situation.

“It was like tunnel vision. I knew everything was imploding,” she recounts. “But in order to manage that, I thought, all I should control and focus on was my study, exercise and food.”

She, Sarah Ravindran, a twenty-one-year-old medical student at the prestigious Monash University, is one of many brave survivors of anorexia nervosa. The Garvan Institute of Medical Research reported that one fifth of sufferers eventually die of the disease, when their minds push their bodies to such a level of exhaustion, malnutrition and frailty that their hearts could stop beating at any given point in time.

When I meet Sarah at Second Wife café, she has just finished her morning placement at Box Hill Hospital, and is ready to scrub up, quite literally, to head to Maroondah Hospital to sit in on a surgery - all part and parcel of the life of a third-year medical student. She greets me with a bright smile and immediately launches into lively conversation, asking me about my weekend and thanking me for the opportunity to speak up. This sense of warmth sets the tone for the highly engaging chat to come and allows me a sigh of relief; the twinkle in her eye is enough for me to know that this is a healthy and happy girl with whom I speak.

“Studying has always been a really, really big part of my life,” Sarah tells me. “I put pressure on myself to do really well and that has its pros and its cons.”

For Sarah, a developing obsession with control and structure, along with the demands of university did not work in her favour. She allowed academic stresses to engulf her. “I freaked out, basically,” she divulges. “And the only thing I could control was the food and exercise, and that’s what I did.”

This is not uncommon amongst people in the Eating Disorder (ED) community. I spoke to Bianca Skilbeck, who works as a counsellor associated with the Australian Centre for Eating Disorders. Her expertise dictates that “there are personality traits that go along with an eating disorder, things like being a perfectionist and being a high achiever.” According to specialists like Bianca, eating disorders are extremely common amongst people who are used to placing themselves under pressure and judgement to attain perfection. Pair this with the toxic dieting culture that constantly shrouds young teens, and you have a perfect breeding ground for mental demons to take over vulnerable youths.

“We’ve all got a relationship with food,” she says. “It’s actually rare to find a woman in particular who has a completely comfortable relationship with food.” Bianca herself battled with restrictive eating from the tender age of ten, but luckily found clarity in her teens, managing to seek professional help and overcome the toxic mindset armed with her steely drive to become a counsellor, which she felt she could not do if she herself was anorexic.

What strikes me most about Bianca is how matter-of-fact she is. She discusses the confronting concepts of body dysmorphia and self-starvation in the hustle and bustle of West Footscray café Willow and Wine, as babies wail around us and cars continually zoom by. I take sips of my coffee, and think to myself, this is the kind of normalised discourse we need surrounding ED, for the sake of all those who suffer.

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research reports that eating disorders, in particular anorexia nervosa, are the third most common chronic illness in girls and young women. According to Eating Disorders Victoria, sixty-four percent of people with eating disorders are female, while twenty percent of all females live their lives struggling with an undiagnosed eating disorder. These statistics are confronting to say the least and have everything to do with the unrealistic body expectations that young girls are faced with from birth and during their upbringing, which are perpetuated blithely by social media influencers.

YouTubers are constantly posting videos with titles like “What I Eat In A Day”, “Trying Intermittent Fasting – It Works!”, “How To Get Kendall Jenner’s Body” and “How To Lose Weight in A Week”. Instagram models spend painstaking hours taking photos from the right angle, and even more time editing them on applications such as FaceTune and VSCO Cam to enhance the aesthetic. This includes simple filters, escalating dangerously to the alteration of one’s body shape, with the elimination of some fat here, and the straightening out of a blemish there.

The modern social media world loves skinny, and skinny role models are what the younger generation of girls are fed from the moment they inevitably step into the sphere. This social media sphere is a distorted idea of reality.

Young girls are subliminally fed the message that skinny is better, healthier, more desirable.

Attractive, hot, more acceptable. 

“I don’t know if you’ve heard the metaphor, where if you’ve got a fish living in sick water, and you take the fish out and fix it, but then put it back in the water, it just doesn’t make any sense,” Bianca laments. “I think this is the culture that we live in, where even if we do eating disorder treatment for people, we still put them back out into a water that says thinner is better.” Such pressure on young girls to look a certain way culminates in great mental strain and can be a direct pathway to the destructive mindset that exacerbates eating disorders. Sarah recalls that her issues regarding her own body image began when she started posting images of herself on her fitness page on Instagram.

“Whenever I would post a photo of myself, it wouldn’t do as well in terms of likes,” she details, divulging how she began to feel pressure to look more like the toned, skinny girls of Instagram.

This is why promoting and advocating for genuine body positivity is so important. Instagram campaigns such as #IWeigh, which was kickstarted by Jameela Jamil, an actress and survivor of ED, are spreading a beautiful message - that we are more than what we physically weigh. The campaign encourages women (and men) to think about what they bring to the table as a person rather than a physical being. People weigh their careers, their aspirations, their values, their hobbies.

According to Bianca, it is step by step that these changes are taking place, and she encourages us as members of society to take responsibility for abolishing fat stigma.

“There’s a level of understanding that you can’t discriminate on people based on race and gender and sexuality,” she points out. “It took Australia long enough to get the vote through for gay marriage, changing people one by one, and that’s what we need to do for fat as well.”

So the question is, how can we help?

The answer is uncomplicated in theory, but difficult to achieve in practise:

1. Vastly improve the Australian support systems for ED. 2. Destigmatise the mental health issues that lie at the crux of ED. 3. Promote genuine body positivity.

Why this is difficult to achieve lies in the lack of understanding and empathy surrounding how ED functions. Bianca recalls a past anorexic client who was told by her GP, after a look up and down, that she was ‘fine’ because her weight seemed okay at face value. In stark contrast, her mental health was at great risk. Further, the constant pressure on young women to be perfect makes it extremely frightening to seek help, and to heal.

“Once again, it’s taking the fish out of the water and then throwing it back into the sick water,” Bianca says, fixing her gaze intently towards my eyes. “What we actually need to fix is people’s perception of what it is to have different sized bodies.”

Eating disorders are extremely harsh mental and physical conditions which are often debilitating and life-threatening. Perhaps a glimmer of hope can be given to the future generation of young girls if we purify the sick water in which we live.

“It’s not about being perfect,” Sarah says with a wry smile. “It’s about being happy. It’s about having those negative thoughts, accepting them, and then pushing forwards in life.”
